Vilho Väisälä

Vilho Väisälä (28.9.1889 – 12.8.1969) was a Finnish intellectual, innovator, and the founder of the Vaisala Corporation. He was one of the pioneers of Finnish high technology, whose boundless curiosity and willingness to experiment, combined with a scientific approach, led to unparalleled inventions. Even today, his work inspires students in this workshop.

History of the workshop

Vilho Väisälä's workshop used to be the site of the Sähköpaja Workshop, led by Senior University Lecturer Kimmo Silvonen. The Sähköpaja Workshop space was originally established in the premises of Otakaari 5. When the School of Electrical Engineering moved mainly to the TUAS building at Maarintie 8, Sähköpaja got new but smaller premises in 2017. Silvonen taught a course called Sähköpaja, named according to the site, which became a great success at the workshop, and the course will continue even after Silvonen has now retired. The enthusiasm he has inspired for electronics lives on and is reflected in today's students in the workshop, which is used by about 500-600 students annually.

Who are teaching at the workshop today

  • Jari Holopainen

    Senior University Lecturer

Jari Holopainen teaches master's students on the Antennas Workshop course, during which various antenna prototypes are produced at the workshop.

  • Clemens Icheln

    University Lecturer

Clemens Icheln continues the Electrical Workshop course developed by Kimmo Silvonen. The course is clearly the most popular workshop course and approximately 300 students participate in it every year.

  • Petri Kärhä

    Principal University Lecturer

Petri Kärhä teaches the Electronics Workshop course at the workshop. It is a 3rd-year bachelor's course where prototypes that are challenging in electrotechnical terms are built.

  • Juha Mallat

    Senior University Lecturer

Juha Mallat teaches the Electronics Workshop course at the workshop.

  • Lauri Palva

    University Lecturer

Lauri Palva teaches the Electronics Workshop course at the workshop.

  • Salu Ylirisku

    Senior University Lecturer

Salu Ylirisku teaches Design Thinking and Prototyping courses, including Advanced Prototyping and Protopaja. He designed the transformation of Sähköpaja into Vilho Väisälä's workshop and managed its online service development.
